The Homeless Shift Project is a grassroots initiative that was created by a team of community-based designers at Architecture for Humanity New York, in partnership with a local women’s shelter. The project seeks to make a positive impact on a condition known as “recidivism,” which is when a client moves into housing but later returns to the shelter system. To reduce recidivism, the project utilizes two inextricably linked components to better prepare the women to address the challenges of living independently: socially responsible design strategies and new programmatic elements.
An extensive research component led to the design of a “model apartment” prototype, to be built within unused space in the existing shelter. This model apartment will act as a teaching and learning space for the women to strengthen their skills for daily living, learn to effectively live with others, and gain experience in responsible problem solving. The apartment seeks to reconnect the women with a sense of permanence and “home,” and provides them with a space in which they can learn to create a home environment that matches and supports their goals for their life beyond the shelter. This new space and programming will help close the gap that the women experience between life within the shelter and life outside the shelter, serving as an important step in the process of re-adjustment or “deinstitutionalization.”
